I’ve been waiting for ages for Lord of the Rings to come out on blu ray, so I could have as close to the movie-going experience as possible, at home. And it was worth the wait. Chockfull of special features, not to mention 2 hours of extended scenes, we had honestly thought we’d seen it all on the dvd version of the extended trilogy. Boy were we in for a surprise.
This new release features the rarely seen Costa Botes documentary (a friend of Peter Jackon’s who helped him write an abstract of the books to pitch to movie studios). If you didn’t already appreciate the work that has gone in to this epic trilogy, or drop your jaw in shock at the number of hours spent handcrafting chainmail armor for orcs, never mind the fact that Bag End had to be disassembled and reconstructed at three different locations, then prepare to have your mind blown. Put on the kettle, call a few friends, and prepare yourselves for 3 shiny new hours of behind-the-scenes glory.
